ARTHRITIS IN OLDER DOGS

By the time they limp, it's been there for years.

Arthritis is the most common condition affecting older dogs, and it's usually well established before you notice a limp. You can't undo that part. What you can change is what their joints rest on for 5,110 hours a year. Here's what a bed can do, and what it can't.

WHY THE BED MATTERS

Arthritis is managed in the hours you're not watching.

The signs are easy to miss.

Circling for longer before they settle. Getting up stiff in the morning. Slowing down on the same walk they've always done. Choosing the cold, hard floor over their own bed.

Most owners put it down to age. Often it's arthritis, and by the time a dog is visibly limping it has usually been developing for a year or two. A dog's joints work like shock absorbers all day, and the real repair happens overnight while they sleep. A bed that doesn't support them means those recovery hours are lost.

“Most owners wait until their dog is limping before they do something about it. By that stage the disease has already been present for one or two years.”

TEGAN · EMERGENCY AND CRITICAL CARE VETERINARY NURSE

It starts long before you see it.

Joint wear begins early and compounds quietly. Cartilage doesn't grow back, so whatever accumulates, stays. That's why a seven-year-old dog usually has more going on than their owner realises, and why the surface they rest on has been shaping their joints since long before anyone was worried about it.

If your dog is already older, this isn't a reason to feel behind. The hours already spent are spent. The hours ahead of them are still hours you can change.

“Owners often underestimate how uncomfortable their dog actually is at home.”

THE THREE LEVERS

The bed is one of three. Here are the other two.

Ask a vet about an arthritic dog and you'll usually get the same three levers. Keep their weight down, because every extra kilo is extra load through the same joint. Talk to your vet about a joint supplement, and look for glucosamine, chondroitin or hyaluronic acid. And get the bed right, because that's where twelve to fourteen hours of every day go.

We only make one of those three. We'd rather give you the whole list.

“If their joints aren't adequately supported through that twelve to fourteen hours that they're asleep, you're just undoing all that hard work you've put in with weight control and joint supplementation.”

TEGAN · EMERGENCY AND CRITICAL CARE VETERINARY NURSE

A soft bed and a supportive one are not the same thing.

Soft feels like kindness. But a bed that's only soft lets your dog sink straight through it, until their weight is resting on the floor through a flat, thin layer of foam. It looks comfortable. Underneath, the same joints are taking the load every night.

For a dog with sore joints that's the difference between resting and just lying there. Support isn't firmness for its own sake. It's holding your dog level so their weight is spread out, not pinned onto their elbows, hips and shoulders.

5,110 hours a year, on the same four joints.

The average dog sleeps around fourteen hours a day. Over a year that's roughly 5,110 hours spent lying on one surface. On flat, thin foam, that's 5,110 hours of pressure landing on the same elbows and hips.

No single night does the damage. The hours do. For a dog whose joints are already sore, those are also the hours where they either recover or they don't.

HERE'S THE FIX

An orthopaedic base holds them level.

Every Dazy bed is built on two layers: a plush comfort layer your dog settles into, over a deep, high-density CertiPUR-US orthopaedic base that takes their weight and doesn't pack down. It holds them level instead of letting them bottom out onto the floor.

It won't reverse arthritis. Nothing will. What it does is take load off the joints carrying it, for every one of those hours. It's the same core that's kept 60,000 dogs off hard ground, and it keeps its shape for years, backed by our lifetime no-sag guarantee. Buy once.

“Memory foam helps to distribute weight evenly and reduce pressure on protruding points such as the elbow, hips, shoulders and hocks.”

A VET'S TAKE

The bed a vet uses in her own clinic.

Dr. Alison Shen is a veterinary acupuncturist with over twenty years of clinical experience. She uses Dazy Dog beds as her treatment surface in clinic, and at home for her own dogs.

We didn't write her a script. She just uses the beds.

“I use Dazy Dog beds as my clinical treatment surface and at home for my own greyhound and Moodle. If it's good enough for my pets, it's definitely good enough for our patients.”

PICK YOUR SHAPE

Same orthopaedic base. Three shapes.

Every Dazy bed is built on the same CertiPUR-US orthopaedic core. For a dog with stiff joints the base matters more than the shape, but a lower edge is easier to get onto and off again.

ONE BED, ANY LOOK

Support underneath. Your choice on top.

The orthopaedic base stays. The cover zips off and goes straight in the machine, which matters more than it sounds for a dog who spends most of the day on it. Every cover is treated with Ultra-Fresh, which inhibits the bacteria, mould and mildew that cause odour. Change the colour for a new room, or switch to Cooling for summer and Faux Fur for winter. Same support, new look. You're not buying a bed you'll replace in a year. You're buying the one you'll keep.

NOT JUST ANOTHER DOG BED

Made properly, by people you can find.

We've built orthopaedic beds in Sydney since 2019, and every one is sold complete with its cover, picked and packed by us, not shipped as flat-pack parts. We've a retail store in Cronulla you can walk into, we've donated over $40,000 in beds to dogs who needed them, and we're the WeMoney Best Pet Bed winner. 60,000 dogs in, we still make one thing: a bed good enough to be the last one.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions.

My dog is already nine. Is it too late?

No. Arthritis can't be undone, and a bed isn't a treatment, but the load going through those joints is something you can change today. Your dog still has thousands of hours of lying down ahead of them. Those hours can work for their body or against it, and that part is still yours to decide.

Will an orthopaedic bed treat my dog's arthritis?

No, and we won't pretend otherwise. Arthritis is a clinical condition and it belongs with your vet. What a proper orthopaedic base does is distribute your dog's weight and reduce pressure on the joints taking the load, for the twelve to fourteen hours a day they spend lying down. Treatment is your vet's job. The surface underneath them is ours.

My dog struggles to get up. Which shape should I get?

The Mattress. It's the same orthopaedic core in a low-profile format, so there's almost nothing to step over. The Signature is the next easiest, and the bolsters give them something to lean into. Round beds have the highest sides, so they suit dogs who still climb in without thinking about it.

My dog likes a soft bed. Won't an orthopaedic one feel hard?

No. The base is firm and supportive, but there's a plush comfort layer on top that your dog settles into. They get the soft surface they like, with support underneath that a purely soft bed can't give. Soft to lie on, supportive where it counts.

How is this different from a cheap 'orthopaedic' bed?

Plenty of cheap beds use the word without the substance: a thin layer of soft foam that flattens in months. Ours is a deep, high-density CertiPUR-US certified core that holds its shape for years, backed by a lifetime no-sag guarantee.

How long will it last?

The orthopaedic core is built to hold its shape for years, not months, and it's backed by our lifetime no-sag guarantee. If the foam ever loses its structure, we'll make it right.

Will my dog take to a new bed?

Most dogs settle in on the first night. Proper support feels noticeably different to flat, thin foam. If yours is hesitant, put it in their usual spot with a familiar blanket on top for a day or two.

What size should I get?

Sizing runs from small through to extra large. Measure your dog nose-to-tail while they're stretched out and add a few centimetres. Click through to the shape you like and there's a size guide on the product page.

You can't change the diagnosis. You can change what they lie on.
